Hello! My name is Marisa Kutter and I am very glad you took the time to visit my page. This page contains the project that I have built for my Digital Humanities class. I chose to research about the Middle Passage because I found it is not something the majority of people know about (unless they were a history major), and it is an extremely important part of the history of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and slavery itself; mistreatment didn’t just start when slaves reached the colonies, it started from the moment that were put on those ships (or even before). Part of my data comes from the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade Database (slavevoyages.org), as well as from primary documents of the British Parliamentary Debates and accounts of the Middle Passage from people who experienced it (one of the most famous would be Olaudah Equiano). The artifacts and images come from the National Museum of African American History and Culture, a part of the Smithsonian.
Currently, yours truly is a sophomore at Creighton University and majoring in History & Spanish, with a co-major in Secondary Education. The ultimate goal is to teach history in Spain, but for the moment, Omaha, NE is where I’ll be. Since I am a Secondary Education major, I have completed one, out of many, high school teaching practicums (pre-student teaching experience). Interacting with students and being able to see them change and grow more as they continue to learn only increased my love for teaching and I am excited to continue on this path!
